In a recent report by Wired, it was revealed that a 19-year-old working for Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had access to sensitive US government systems despite a history of associations with cybercrime communities that should have prevented him from obtaining security clearances. This teenager, named Edward Coristine, had ties to ‘The Com,’ a network of Discord and Telegram chat channels known for facilitating cybercriminal activities.

Since President Trump’s second term, Musk’s DOGE team has been able to access a vast amount of personal and sensitive data on American citizens, taking control of databases at major government agencies such as the U.S. Treasury, Office of Personnel Management, Department of Education, and Department of Health and Human Resources. Coristine, also known as “Big Balls” online, founded a company called Tesla.Sexy LLC at a young age, which controls web domains, including Russian-registered domains.

Coristine’s online activities and associations with cybercrime communities raised concerns about his access to government systems. He had worked at companies specializing in DDoS protection and Internet service provision, with connections to individuals involved in cybercriminal activities. Despite his brief tenure at a company known for hiring reformed hackers, Path Networks, concerns about his past behavior persisted.

The Com, where Coristine was active, is likened to a violent street gang in the cybersecurity world. Former members often face personal attacks and harassment even after leaving the community. This poses a significant security risk when granting access to sensitive government information. The vetting process for security clearances takes into account an individual’s trustworthiness, reliability, and ability to protect classified information, making it crucial to ensure that individuals with ties to cybercriminal activities are not given access to sensitive data.

In light of recent controversies, Elon Musk’s DOGE team has faced scrutiny, with one member resigning due to racist posts on social media. Despite these issues, Musk and his team continue to operate with security clearances and compliance with federal laws, as endorsed by President Trump and Vice President JD Vance. The ongoing efforts by Musk’s team to access and control government databases have sparked legal challenges and lawsuits, with concerns about potential privacy breaches and unauthorized access to sensitive information.

As the debate continues over Musk’s influence on federal agencies and access to government systems, the implications of allowing individuals with ties to cybercrime communities to handle sensitive data remain a significant concern. The legal challenges and public scrutiny surrounding DOGE’s activities highlight the importance of maintaining strict security protocols and vetting procedures to safeguard sensitive government information from potential threats.
