The Maldives Police Service (MPS) Cyber Crime Center has issued a warning about potential scams on Facebook’s ‘Marketplace’ platform. The latest development revealed by the Cyber Crime Center introduces a new authentication method that serves as an alternative to the traditional OTP authentication process.

As part of their cautionary measures, the Cyber Crime Center has outlined ways for users to identify suspicious listings and posts on the Marketplace. They urge individuals to conduct thorough research before making any purchases, especially if a deal seems too good to be true or is priced attractively. Additionally, they advise users to check the seller’s profile for red flags, such as limited information, a new profile, or few friends.

In cases where the seller is deemed reliable, the Cyber Crime Center recommends opting for cash on delivery as a secure payment method. This allows buyers to inspect the item before making the payment and ensures a mutual agreement between both parties.

In a broader context, the Cyber Crime Center highlights the challenges faced by small businesses in the Maldives due to dishonest customer behavior. Some customers engage in fraudulent activities, such as failing to pay after receiving an order or avoiding communication, which poses a threat to the livelihood of local enterprises. It underscores the importance of clear communication and payment policies for businesses and emphasizes the impact of consumer actions on the local economy.

The introduction of flash calls as an alternative to OTP authentication has seen an increase in scam incidents, with scammers exploiting this technology to defraud individuals. Unlike OTP, flash calls are a more cost-effective and faster method of authentication, making them an attractive option for companies. However, scammers have adapted to this change in technology and are using various tactics to trick individuals into revealing their flash call numbers and gaining unauthorized access to accounts.

As the use of flash calls becomes more widespread, it is vital for individuals to educate themselves about this authentication method and remain vigilant against potential scams. The Cyber Crime Center’s advice serves as a timely reminder for users to exercise caution while conducting transactions online and to stay informed about emerging technologies and scam tactics. By staying informed and alert, individuals can protect themselves from falling victim to cybercrime activities on social media platforms like Facebook Marketplace.
