Threat Actors Asserting AMD Source Code Breach on Hacking Forums

A threat actor known as “IntelBroker” has recently claimed to have successfully breached AMD in June 2024, resulting in the alleged theft of sensitive data. This stolen data, now being offered for sale on hacking forums, reportedly includes a wide range of confidential information such as future product plans, specification sheets, employee and customer databases, property files, ROMs, source code, firmware, and financial documents.

The employee database that was compromised supposedly contains a wealth of personal information about AMD personnel, including user IDs, first and last names, job functions, business phone numbers, email addresses, and employment status. IntelBroker is seeking payment for this data exclusively in the form of Monero (XMR) cryptocurrency and has even gone as far as to involve a middleman for facilitating transactions.

This threat actor, IntelBroker, has a notorious track record within the cybersecurity community, having previously been linked to high-profile hacks targeting entities such as Europol, Home Depot, the U.S. Pentagon, and allegedly being involved in one of the T-Mobile data breaches. Despite this known reputation, the origins and exact affiliations of IntelBroker remain shrouded in mystery.

If the claims made by IntelBroker regarding the AMD breach are validated, it could have far-reaching implications for AMD as well as its employees, customers, and partners. The exposure of sensitive data like source code, firmware, future product plans, and employee information raises serious concerns about potential exploitation if this information falls into the wrong hands.

In response to this alarming situation, it is likely that AMD’s IT and security teams are currently undertaking urgent investigations to verify the validity of the breach and determine the full scope of the security incident. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges that companies face in safeguarding their digital assets against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, highlighting the critical importance of deploying robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access.

As the investigation into the AMD breach continues to unfold, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the extent of the data breach and the potential impact on AMD and its stakeholders. This ongoing story underscores the urgent need for organizations to remain vigilant and proactive in fortifying their cybersecurity defenses to mitigate the risks posed by malicious threat actors.
