Vodafone Business has released a concerning report detailing the impact of cybercrime on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. According to the report titled “Securing Success: The Role of Cybersecurity in SME Growth”, these businesses are collectively losing a significant £3.4 billion annually due to cybersecurity breaches.
The research conducted by Vodafone reveals that on average, a cyberattack costs a small firm around £3,398, while larger firms with 50 or more employees face even higher costs, amounting to £5,001 per attack. Shockingly, the study also found that 32% of SMEs do not have any cybersecurity measures in place, and more than half of the employees have never received formal cybersecurity training.
The threat landscape for SMEs is becoming increasingly challenging, with 35% of these businesses reporting cyber incidents in 2024 alone. Common cyber threats such as phishing, ransomware, and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks pose serious risks to SMEs. The report also highlights the financial constraints faced by these businesses, with 38% spending less than £100 annually on cybersecurity measures.
Nick Gliddon, the CEO of Vodafone Business UK, emphasized the critical need to address these cybersecurity challenges. He expressed concern over the significant financial losses incurred by SMEs due to inadequate cybersecurity measures, stating that in the evolving digital landscape, cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated and SMEs are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals.
In response to these challenges, Vodafone is offering SMEs a free one-month trial of CybSafe, an AI-driven platform that provides cybersecurity education and training. The report also includes policy recommendations aimed at enhancing cybersecurity protections for SMEs, such as increasing funding for the Cyber Local initiative, raising awareness about Cyber Essentials, and improving tax incentives for cybersecurity investments. It also suggests fostering public-private partnerships to leverage the expertise of larger organizations to support smaller firms.
Ibrahim Dogus, Co-Chair of SME4Labour, emphasized the importance of addressing cybersecurity as a critical business decision. He stressed that protecting SMEs is not only about safeguarding businesses but also about protecting jobs, fostering innovation, and securing the economic future of the UK.
