Ukraine at D+501: Auxiliary or Privateer?

Russian strikes continue to claim civilian lives in Ukrainian towns, with Lyman being the latest target. Despite Ukraine’s counteroffensive showing progress along the line of contact, the advances have been slower than desired. Resource shortages, extensive Russian field fortifications, and Ukraine’s attritional tactics have been identified as reasons for the slow advance, as reported by Al Jazeera and The Wall Street Journal.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has highlighted Bakhmut as a site of intense fighting, with Ukrainian forces making steady gains towards enveloping and ejecting Russian forces from the city. The Russian defenders are likely struggling with poor morale and a limited ability to find and strike Ukrainian artillery. The MoD predicts that the Russian leadership would find it politically unacceptable to concede Bakhmut due to its symbolic weight as one of the few Russian gains in the past year. However, there are likely few reserves available for the sector.

According to the MoD’s Monday situation report, Russia is facing difficulties with combat medical services. The influx of military casualties has likely strained the provision of civilian medical services in border regions near Ukraine. It is estimated that up to 50% of Russian combat fatalities could have been prevented with proper first aid. Slow casualty evacuation and the inappropriate use of combat tourniquets have been identified as leading causes of preventable fatalities and amputations.

A study conducted by independent Russian news outlets, Mediazona and Meduza, in collaboration with a data scientist at Tübingen University, estimates that the number of Russian deaths in the war ranges from 40,000 to 55,000. The total number of dead and wounded is believed to be around 125,000.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy marked the 500th day of Russia’s war with a visit to Snake Island in the Black Sea. Snake Island has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance after Russian naval forces attacked and later abandoned it. Various governments friendly to Ukraine expressed continued support on the 500th day of the war. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tweeted a message of support, emphasizing the US’s commitment to Ukraine’s fight for freedom. British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace also issued a statement, highlighting the importance of supporting Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty and democracy.

A notable figure in the war, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is facing increasing scrutiny. Russian state television has been airing footage of raids on his property, depicting a mansion filled with cash, expensive possessions, and an array of weapons. Prigozhin, former head of the Wagner Group and leader of the mutinous march on Moscow, is now being framed as a criminal and a crook. The British MoD observes that Russian state-approved media has undergone three phases in responding to the mutiny, initially being caught off guard, then seeking to correct claims of passivity, and finally downplaying the significance of Prigozhin and tarnishing his character.

While state intervention appears to have silenced Wagner Group Telegram channels, Prigozhin recently returned to denounce media criticism of him on television. The situation remains unclear regarding the agreement that ended the march on Moscow, with signs suggesting a softening of the agreement and indications that Wagnerites are still able to move freely in Russia.

President Putin has been working to project strength through prominent public engagements. The UK’s MoD notes that Putin has been utilizing friendly media to enhance his public stature. However, the Western press has also highlighted Putin’s luxury lifestyle, including his use of an armored train for domestic travel, which includes amenities such as a spa and gym.

As the war continues, the situation remains fluid, with ongoing casualties and a complex political landscape. Both the Ukrainian and Russian forces face challenges and their respective leaderships must navigate the evolving dynamics to achieve their desired outcomes.
