Rapid7 and Varonis Are the Latest to Offer Managed Security Services
In an effort to provide clients with a comprehensive security solution, threat management firm Rapid7 and data-security firm Varonis recently announced new managed services tailored to meet the needs of businesses facing increasingly complex cybersecurity threats.
On Feb. 6, Rapid7 unveiled its Managed Digital Risk Protection (DRP) service, which is designed to regularly monitor the Internet and the dark web for potential indicators of targeted attacks against a client’s business. A day earlier, Varonis expanded its product portfolio to offer a managed service that focuses on detecting and responding to incidents related to potential ransomware attacks and data breaches, claiming a rapid response time of within 30 minutes.
According to Matthew Radolec, vice president of incident response and cloud operations at Varonis, the new service aims to address the issue of data breaches which often occur when a regular user account is compromised, allowing attackers to access and exfiltrate sensitive data without detection. The company has given the new market segment a name, Managed Data Detection and Response (MDDR), to differentiate it within the industry.
As companies continue to consolidate their security vendors, the trend of bundling complex security capabilities into managed offerings is gaining momentum. According to a survey conducted in September 2022, three-quarters of organizations have pursued vendor consolidation, prompting security firms to distinguish themselves in the market by creating new market segments and offering managed versions of emerging security services.
While the proliferation of detection and response services creates a complex cybersecurity landscape, it is clear that businesses are seeking outcomes—specifically the detection and prevention of threats, rather than a strict adherence to specific tools and technologies.
With the increasing complexity of security threats, the adoption of managed services is likely to grow. Forrester Research emphasizes that the shortage of cybersecurity professionals has led organizations to seek ways to automate threat detection and response, driving the deployment of machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve the overall performance of security solutions.
Varonis’ MDDR service aims to assist companies in tracking their sensitive data and detecting potential misuse or threats, placing a strong emphasis on securing data from within the business outward. This approach, Radolec explains, focuses on reducing the blast radius of information accessible to any individual and securing the organization’s data posture.
Ultimately, the goal of such managed security services is to provide a comprehensive solution that spans the entirety of a company’s detection surface, including identities, data, cloud, and applications, to avoid niche offerings that operate in isolation. As the complexity of security challenges continues to evolve, the demand for holistic and comprehensive security offerings is likely to increase.
