Warning to Travelers: Cybercrime Named Top Safety Threat in 2025 | Business

In the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats, travelers in 2025 face a new danger that could jeopardize their vacation plans and personal information. Seth Ruden, director of global advisory at BioCatch, suggests that frequent travelers are at higher risk due to the potential monetary gain for cybercriminals from stealing travel rewards, airline miles, and payment details stored in travel accounts. This warning comes as cybersecurity concerns among travelers reach record levels, with a recent Travelers Insurance study showing that 62 percent of respondents are worried about online safety, the highest level in 11 years.

One of the most significant cyber threats facing travelers is phishing scams, which are designed to steal personal information through fake travel websites and rental listings. Check Point Research reports that in 2024, 1 in every 33 newly registered vacation-related domains were malicious or suspicious, including phishing sites imitating well-known travel platforms like Booking.com and Kayak. Frank Harrison, regional security director of the Americas at World Travel Protection, emphasizes the need for cybersecurity measures focused on risk mitigation to protect travelers and their data.

Abhishek Karnik, head of threat research at McAfee, highlights two vulnerable points for travelers: while booking their trips online and while traveling. To combat these threats, Karnik advises travelers to practice good online hygiene, such as changing passwords frequently, enabling two-factor authentication, and avoiding clicking on suspicious links. Additionally, using a virtual private network (VPN) when connecting to public Wi-Fi can help secure personal data from potential cyber attacks.

Furthermore, travelers should be wary of social engineering threats like impersonation scams, where attackers pose as hotel staff or tour guides to access personal information on devices. Rishika Desai, a threat researcher at BforeAI, warns against falling for phishing emails that mimic reputable companies to trick travelers into revealing sensitive information. She advises verifying the source directly through the company’s official website to avoid falling victim to such scams.

As cybercriminals use artificial intelligence to create convincing websites and generate fake offers, Cache Merrill, CEO of Zibtek, urges travelers to remain vigilant and skeptical of online deals that seem too good to be true. While AI technology can make it harder to differentiate between legitimate and fake offers, travelers can learn to identify AI-generated content with practice or simply avoid deals that appear suspicious.

Ultimately, cybersecurity support and training are essential for travelers to protect themselves against cyber threats. John Gobbels, COO of Medjet, emphasizes the importance of planning for potential problems before they arise and having backup systems in place. Additionally, cybersecurity assistance programs like those offered by BOXX Insurance and World Travel Protection can help both business and leisure travelers predict and prevent digital risks during their trips.
