Where Are the Previous Winners of the Most Inspiring Women in Cyber Now?

TAMZIN: I think there really needs to be a bigger conversation about toxic work cultures and the ‘boys club’ mentality that exists within some areas of cyber. It’s important that the industry as a whole works to create a more inclusive and supportive environment. Many women in cyber have expressed feeling isolated or unheard in male-dominated fields, and this is something that really needs to change. I also think mentoring and sponsorship programs specifically targeted towards women are essential. Women could benefit greatly from having a network of senior professionals who are invested in their success and can offer guidance and support. It’s about building a community where women feel they have the resources and backing they need to thrive in their careers. ILLYANA: I completely agree with Tamzin. Cultivating an environment that fosters mentorship and sponsor support is crucial in supporting women in the industry. There’s also a need for more emphasis on diversity and inclusion in hiring practices. It’s important for companies to actively seek out and provide equal opportunities for female candidates. This goes beyond just checking a box on a diversity quota, but really creating environments where women are not only welcomed but are able to grow and excel. Additionally, creating forums for women to share their experiences and support one another is important. We need to continue to highlight and celebrate the achievements of women in cyber in order to inspire others and show them that success is possible. Ultimately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s about making concerted efforts across the board to create a more inclusive, supportive, and diverse industry. It’s clear that the industry itself has a role to play in wrangling outdated attitudes and behaviour and making a space that is not only safe, but welcoming for the women that follow behind us. These are the voices of real women in the industry. They are the ones who are paving the way and setting the example for true gender equality in the industry. It’s clear that the cybersecurity industry and its inclusive practices are evolving in the right direction, but there is still much more work to be done. It’s important to listen to these voices and take action in order to create a more equitable and inclusive industry for everyone.
