Microsoft Investigates Windows 11 Game-Crashing Issue Linked to RGB Hardware

Microsoft is currently addressing a significant compatibility issue concerning Windows 11 that affects certain games, causing them to crash, freeze, or lead to unexpected system restarts on devices featuring RGB lighting hardware and related low-level drivers. This predicament has garnered considerable attention from gamers and tech enthusiasts alike.

The complications surfaced following the release of updates to Windows on August 11, 2026, including the notable KB5121003 update for OS Build 26100.9168. Reports of these issues began to circulate shortly after this update was deployed, prompting Microsoft to initiate an investigation on August 19. By August 21, the tech giant provided an update indicating that RGB-enabled peripherals or internal components may be at the root of the problem.

The affected systems reportedly have drivers or code components with names similar to “inpoutx64.” These drivers are typically associated with software responsible for controlling RGB lighting across various hardware types, including peripherals, motherboards, cooling systems, graphics cards, and other internal components. The presence of such components highlights the potential complexity involved in ensuring system stability.

In a concerning development for gamers, Microsoft has received numerous reports about specific game titles that are experiencing these issues. Notable among them are ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and THE FINALS. Users have described a range of symptoms manifesting differently across various systems and games. In some cases, the gaming experience abruptly becomes unresponsive right after launching, while in others, the title closes unexpectedly, displaying an “EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION” error, or even forces a complete restart of the device.

This situation is not confined to a single version of Windows 11; it affects both version 25H2 and version 24H2. Importantly, Windows Server editions have not been reported as being impacted. The breadth of the issue suggests a deeper compatibility challenge that Microsoft is striving to navigate. The ongoing investigation hints at a probable correlation between the crash incidents and RGB-capable devices that implement components associated with inpoutx64.

Despite the investigation, Microsoft has not yet elucidated the precise technical reasons behind these crashes. Questions remain whether the problems arise from driver behavior, kernel-level access, interactions with anti-cheat systems, memory handling issues, or other compatibility conflicts precipitated by the recent updates. The “EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION” error is particularly noteworthy, as it indicates that a process tried to access protected or invalid memory. However, Microsoft has clarified that this error is not linked to a security vulnerability, framing the situation instead as one of stability and compatibility concerns.

Low-level hardware-control drivers can lead to intricate interactions within games, especially those that employ rigorous anti-cheat measures or conduct integrity checks during their launch phases. RGB management utilities generally require privileged access to device registers or hardware interfaces, raising the likelihood of conflicts when the operating system undergoes changes. Such complexity only amplifies the challenges faced by both users and developers.

While a permanent resolution is still under development, Microsoft has recommended a temporary workaround for affected users. They can disable the inpoutx64 driver through the Windows Registry, but should first ensure that they back up their registry to prevent any unintended consequences. By accessing the Registry Editor and navigating to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\inpoutx64

users can open the Start registry value, change its Value data to 4, and subsequently restart their computers. This action effectively disables the driver, although it may disrupt RGB features or hinder the functioning of associated lighting-control software. For those who encounter such side effects, the driver can be restored by reverting the registry setting to its previous value.

Microsoft is also urging impacted users to submit reports via the Feedback Hub by pressing Windows + F. The company remains committed to further investigating the interplay between RGB components and the affected games and is anticipated to release updates as soon as the root cause is determined. As the company navigates this intricate issue, the gaming community remains hopeful for a swift resolution to restore their gaming experiences.
