The UK’s data protection regulator has issued a warning regarding the lack of awareness among as many as 14 million UK adults on how to properly wipe personal data from their mobile devices. This issue could potentially jeopardize their privacy when they upgrade their handsets during the festive season.
According to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), a survey conducted with over 2100 members of the public in December aimed to gauge their knowledge of data security. The results revealed that while 27% of respondents are planning to purchase a new device this Christmas, nearly a third (29%) are unsure about how to erase personal information from their old devices.
As a result, many individuals tend to hold onto their outdated devices, with the average Brit hoarding three unused gadgets at home. A staggering 75% of respondents admitted to keeping at least one old device, and 20% of them cited concerns about their personal information as the reason for retaining these devices.
The survey also found that 71% of UK adults acknowledge the importance of erasing personal data, but 24% find the process to be too challenging. More alarmingly, 14% of young adults aged 18-34 stated that they would not wipe their devices at all. Additionally, 21% of young people do not see the significance of erasing personal information, and 23% are not bothered about the potential consequences of not securing their data.
Suzanne Gordon, the director of public advice and data protection complaints, emphasized that the upcoming new year presents an ideal opportunity for individuals to declutter and dispose of their old devices responsibly. She highlighted that erasing personal information is a crucial step to prevent unauthorized access and potential misuse of data.
Scott Butler, the executive director of Recycle Your Electricals, encouraged UK consumers to capitalize on the festive period by safely selling their old electrical devices and contributing to environmental sustainability. He emphasized the importance of reusing or recycling any electronic items that are broken, reiterating that items with a plug, cable, or battery should never be discarded in the trash.
