The 9th eHealth Security Conference, co-hosted by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), Hungary’s National Cybersecurity Centre, and Semmelweis University, took place in Budapest on November 6th, 2024. The conference aimed to address the increasing challenges faced by the healthcare sector in terms of cybersecurity, particularly focusing on the threats posed by ransomware, cybercrime, malicious actors, and phishing campaigns.

In recent years, medical data and systems have become prime targets for cybercriminals, posing a significant risk to the healthcare ecosystem. With the growing number of cyber threats, it is crucial for public and private entities in the sector to fortify their defenses and safeguard sensitive information.

The event centered around the implementation of the NIS2 Directive for the health sector and highlighted key developments in eHealth policy, such as the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and the role of artificial intelligence (AI). Sessions at the conference delved into the evolving threat landscape and issues surrounding health data sharing, inviting experts from various European Member States to share their insights and expertise.

According to the 2024 ENISA Threat Landscape report, the health sector accounted for 487 incidents, with ransomware attacks and data breaches making up a significant portion of the reported incidents. This reinforces the urgent need for improved cybersecurity measures in the healthcare industry to mitigate potential risks and vulnerabilities.

Regulatory developments, such as the NIS2 transposition and the forthcoming EHDS, have prompted a greater focus on cybersecurity within the health sector. The European Commission’s political guidelines for 2024-2029 include the development of a European action plan for the cybersecurity of hospitals and healthcare providers, further underscoring the importance of safeguarding medical data.

The conference provided a platform for participants to stay informed about the latest trends and best practices, as well as network with industry professionals and experts. It also served as an opportunity for stakeholders to engage in discussions on the evolving health cybersecurity landscape and explore potential solutions to enhance the sector’s resilience against cyber threats.

ENISA’s report on ransomware as a significant cybersecurity threat in the health industry highlights the critical need for proactive measures to address such attacks. The impact of ransomware incidents on healthcare organizations, both in terms of frequency and consequences, underscores the pressing need for enhanced cybersecurity measures to protect patient safety and ensure the continuity of healthcare services.

In conclusion, the 9th eHealth Security Conference provided a valuable platform for industry stakeholders to collaborate, exchange insights, and work towards strengthening cybersecurity in the healthcare sector. By addressing the growing challenges and threats posed by cybercrime, the conference aimed to foster a more secure and resilient eHealth ecosystem for the future.
