Last month, an esports tournament of the popular shooter game Apex Legends was disrupted by a hacker who hacked two well-known streamers mid-game, making it appear as though they were using cheats. The incident caused quite a stir in the gaming community, forcing the organizers to suspend the tournament on March 17.

The hacker, known as Destroyer2009, who claimed responsibility for the hacks, stated that he did it “for fun.” However, the repercussions of his actions were significant, not only tarnishing the reputation of the streamers targeted, ImperialHal and Genburten, but also raising questions about the security measures in place for online gaming tournaments.

In response to the hacking incident, the developers of Apex Legends, Respawn, took action to address the vulnerability exploited by the hacker. They released a series of updates aimed at protecting the Apex Legends player community and ensuring the competitive integrity of the game. Destroyer2009 confirmed that the patches deployed by Respawn effectively closed the loophole he had used to carry out the hacks.

Despite the resolution of the hacking saga, Respawn has been vague about the specifics of the updates and their impact on the exploited vulnerability. TechCrunch reached out to Respawn and Electronic Arts, the studio’s owners, for clarification on the matter, but received no response. The lack of transparency from the companies regarding the patch updates has raised concerns among players and the broader gaming community.

Destroyer2009, who refrained from revealing technical details of the exploit, indicated that he would not engage in further public hacks, as the consequences could be severe. He expressed his intention to continue playing the game until it loses its appeal, acknowledging the risks associated with unauthorized hacking activities.

In the aftermath of the incident, several Apex Legends players and streamers voiced their opinions on the hacks through various online platforms. The disruption caused by Destroyer2009’s actions highlighted the potential impact of cyber threats on the gaming industry and the need for proactive security measures to safeguard against future intrusions.

As the dust settles on the esports tournament hack, the gaming community remains vigilant, calling for greater transparency from developers and organizers to prevent similar incidents in the future. The episode serves as a cautionary tale about the vulnerabilities inherent in online gaming and the importance of maintaining a secure and fair playing environment for all participants.
