AT&T, a Dallas-based telecommunications company, is stepping up to address the alarming rise in cybercrime targeting seniors. With losses exceeding $12.5 billion reported by the FBI in 2023, including $3.4 billion from people over 60, the company is taking action to protect older adults in the digital age.

The Chief Sustainability Officer of AT&T, Charlene Lake, emphasized the importance of being tech-savvy in today’s world where technology is pervasive in daily activities such as health check-ups, financial management, travel bookings, work, and communication with loved ones. Recognizing the need for digital safety measures, AT&T organized a volunteer event in Dallas during Cybersecurity Awareness Month to assemble over 2,500 technology “kits” for local nonprofits, focusing on digital safety for seniors.

These kits, distributed in partnership with Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) by AARP, contained not just gadgets but also educational materials to raise awareness about online security. Along with crossword puzzles, flashlights, and styluses, each kit included essential information on navigating the internet, recognizing scams, staying safe online, and managing passwords securely. The aim was to empower older adults to utilize technology with confidence and protect themselves from cyber risks.

Moreover, AT&T’s commitment to bridging the digital divide is evident through its $5 billion investment since 2021, with a particular emphasis on supporting older communities vulnerable to cyber threats. While the tech safety kits were distributed to selected individuals affiliated with AARP, AT&T has made similar resources available online through its Screen Ready website. This platform offers a range of information, including a Digital Safety section to educate users about cyber scams and an online learning portal for improving digital literacy.

Charlene Lake highlighted the significance of enhancing digital literacy among older adults to ensure their safety and security online. By collaborating with OATS by AARP on initiatives aimed at empowering older adults to navigate the internet securely, AT&T is making a tangible impact in the community.

Not only are seniors benefiting from AT&T’s digital initiative, but local nonprofits like the Boys & Girls Club of Dallas & Tarrant Counties, The Stewpot, The Wilkinson Center, and For Oak Cliff are also receiving support to spread awareness about cyber safety across different generations. This multi-faceted approach underscores AT&T’s commitment to creating a safer digital environment for all individuals, regardless of age.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, AT&T’s proactive efforts to educate and empower older adults in navigating the digital landscape are crucial in safeguarding vulnerable populations from online risks.
