Cerebral Valley Hackers Develop $20 Open Source Smart Glasses

A team of five individuals recently participated in a 24-hour hackathon project last weekend in San Francisco, producing a groundbreaking innovation that could potentially revolutionize the smart glasses industry. The result of their collaboration was the development of a pair of smart glasses under the name Open Glass, which only cost $20 to create. These glasses are designed to connect visual and auditory input to an AI chatbot, such as Meta’s Llama 3.

The project was initiated when Scott Fitsimones met with Nik Shevchenko in downtown San Francisco on a Saturday morning, completely unaware that they would end up spending the next 24 hours together at an AI hackathon. Initially, Fitsimones believed he was picking up an AI pendant from Shevchenko, whom he described as a key figure in San Francisco’s AI wearable movement. However, their chance encounter led to the formation of a winning team that garnered significant interest, with approximately 1,500 individuals signing up on a waitlist to pre-order their open-source smart glasses.

The team comprised Shevchenko, who focused on building the hardware elements for the smart glasses, along with Stepnan Korshakov, who tackled the complex software challenges of the project. Joining them were Fitsimones, Shreeganesh Ramanan, and Jatin Gupta, all of whom played pivotal roles in the development of Open Glass. The team’s collaboration at the hackathon culminated in the creation of affordable smart glasses equipped with a camera for capturing images and a microphone for transcribing audio in real-time.

Despite encountering a minor glitch in the glasses’ speech-to-text functionality during a demonstration, Shevchenko’s team emerged victorious at the hackathon, receiving praise from industry executives and tech experts. The success of Open Glass lies in its affordability and accessibility, offering developers the flexibility to customize the glasses based on their preferences and requirements.
