An international law enforcement operation has successfully shut down BreachForums, a notorious criminal forum used by hackers to post and sell the contents of hacked databases. The website, which operated on both the clear and dark web, now displays a seizure notice indicating that it is “under the control of the FBI” and features the logos of various law enforcement agencies from around the world, including New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Iceland, and Ukraine.

According to the seized site, the FBI is currently reviewing the backend data of the forum. Additionally, a dedicated FBI website has been set up to allow victims or individuals with information related to criminal data breach forums to submit any relevant details to assist in ongoing investigations. At the time of reporting, the FBI has not responded to requests for comments on the matter.

This particular iteration of BreachForums is a successor to a previous version that was shut down by law enforcement in March 2023. It became operational again in June, under the leadership of the online hacking group known as ShinyHunters. The website of the alleged administrator of BreachForums, known as “Baphomet,” also appears to be inaccessible.

In a related development, Conor Brian Fitzpatrick, who was identified as the administrator of the original BreachForums, was arrested last year at his home in Hudson Valley. Fitzpatrick, who is also known by the alias “Pompompurin,” managed to avoid a prison sentence during his recent sentencing earlier this year.

BreachForums itself is considered a successor to Raidforums, another criminal forum that was targeted in a joint international law enforcement operation that resulted in the site being closed down in February 2022. The continuous crackdown on such illegal online platforms highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies worldwide to combat cybercrime and prevent the exploitation of hacked data for illicit purposes.
