Hardware Hacker Successfully Runs GTA Vice City On TP-Link Router And Radeon GPU

In a truly mind-boggling display of hardware hacking prowess, a mysterious individual operating under the moniker Manawyrm has managed to achieve the seemingly impossible: running Grand Theft Auto (GTA) Vice City on a TP-Link router. This feat, which would have seemed like a distant fantasy to most, has now become a reality thanks to the ingenuity and technical wizardry of this intrepid hacker based in Germany.

The astonishing achievement was proudly showcased in a video posted on YouTube by Manawyrm, where he demonstrates the successful operation of GTA Vice City on a TP-Link WDR4900 router with the aid of an AMD Radeon HD 7470 serving as an external GPU. The video serves as a testament to the hacker’s skill and determination in pushing the boundaries of what is thought to be possible with consumer hardware.

But why did Manawyrm choose the TP-Link WDR4900 router, a model dating back to 2013? According to an explanation by Tom’s Hardware, this particular router model was a popular choice among hardware enthusiasts and hackers due to its unique PowerPC-based CPU, specifically a PowerPC e500v2 32-bit processor manufactured by NXP. This distinctive feature made it an ideal candidate for ambitious modding projects such as the one undertaken by Manawyrm.

One of the key challenges faced by the hacker in this project was the integration of an eGPU with the TP-Link router, requiring the custom design of a mini PCIe breakout PCB to establish a connection between the router’s CPU and the spare PCIe 2.0 interface of the external GPU. While initially attempting to use a more powerful RX 570 GPU, Manawyrm had to switch to the Radeon HD 7470 due to compatibility issues, highlighting the intricate and experimental nature of the project.

On the software side, the hacker implemented a bespoke version of Debian Linux with specific kernel modules enabled to facilitate the running of GTA Vice City on the unconventional router-eGPU setup. This meticulous software configuration, coupled with the hardware modifications, enabled the successful execution of the game on a platform never intended for such high-performance applications.

The unconventional yet groundbreaking achievement by Manawyrm has garnered attention and admiration from tech enthusiasts and modding communities worldwide, shedding light on the endless possibilities that can be explored through creative hardware hacking endeavors. By pushing the limits of traditional hardware configurations, individuals like Manawyrm continue to inspire innovation and drive the evolution of technology in unforeseen directions.

As the world marvels at the audacious feat of running GTA Vice City on a TP-Link router, the story serves as a reminder of the endless potential that exists at the intersection of technology and creativity. With hackers like Manawyrm leading the charge, the boundaries of what is considered possible in the realm of hardware modification continue to be pushed, opening up new realms of exploration and discovery for tech enthusiasts everywhere.
