Microsoft confirms that Russian hackers gained access to customer emails

Microsoft has recently confirmed that Russian hackers who previously managed to infiltrate staff inboxes have also gained access to emails from customers. This disclosure comes six months after the initial breach was exposed, shedding light on the widespread impact of the attack as Microsoft comes under increased scrutiny regarding the security of its software and systems in the face of foreign threats.

It was revealed that a Chinese hacking group had also breached Microsoft last year, stealing thousands of U.S. government emails. While the Russian government has not yet responded to these hacking allegations, Microsoft has stated that the hackers specifically targeted cybersecurity researchers who were looking into the activities of the Russian hacking group.

A spokesperson for Microsoft shared in an email statement, “This week we are continuing notifications to customers who corresponded with Microsoft corporate email accounts that were exfiltrated by the Midnight Blizzard threat actor.” The action was first reported by Bloomberg earlier in the day.

The company mentioned that it is in the process of notifying affected customers about the compromised emails, but did not provide specific details regarding the number of customers impacted or the amount of emails stolen. The spokesperson added, “This is increased detail for customers who have already been notified and also includes new notifications. We’re committed to sharing information with our customers as our investigation continues.”

Back in January, Microsoft, known as the world’s largest software vendor, had indicated that Midnight Blizzard had only managed to access “a very small percentage” of the company’s corporate email accounts. However, four months later, it was reported that these hackers were still persistently attempting to breach Microsoft’s systems, raising concerns among security industry peers and customers about the ongoing vulnerability of Microsoft’s systems.

The ongoing revelations about the extent of the breach and the continued efforts by hackers to infiltrate Microsoft’s systems have raised doubts about the company’s ability to protect sensitive information and data belonging to both its staff and customers. The fact that multiple hacking groups from different countries have managed to breach Microsoft’s security systems is a cause for serious concern and calls for a reassessment of the company’s cybersecurity measures.

As Microsoft works towards addressing the aftermath of these breaches and enhancing its security protocols, customers are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their information.
