A successful operation led by the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Task Force/Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force resulted in the rescue of two children and the recovery of tens of thousands of images of child pornography across Northern California. The three-week crackdown, named “Creep Sweep,” targeted 21 locations in nine counties.

The intensive investigation by detectives from the task force identified suspects from various occupations and backgrounds, including a pilot, scientific researcher, parents, mechanics, IT professionals, engineers, and retired individuals. These suspects were tracked for months as they shared illicit images over the internet, with authorities focusing on those with a higher level of sophistication and potential access to live victims.

During the operation, law enforcement officers freed two children under four years old who were suspected of being sexually assaulted by a relative. In another location, a suspect was found to possess over 4,600 files of child sexual assault material and more than 27,000 files of child erotica. Additional caches of electronic devices and compact discs containing more illicit images were discovered in other residences.

The impact of the operation led at least one suspect to quit their job and flee the country upon learning of the task force’s actions. Several cases are now under review for potential federal charges, highlighting the severity of the crimes committed by these individuals.

Collaboration between nearly 30 law enforcement agencies, including Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Folsom police, Placer County Sheriff’s Department, and Sacramento County Probation Department, was crucial to the success of the operation. These agencies worked together to ensure that suspected child sex predators were identified and apprehended, ultimately leading to the rescue of vulnerable victims and the seizure of a significant number of illegal images.

Overall, the “Creep Sweep” operation serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by child predators in our communities. The tireless efforts of law enforcement personnel and task forces dedicated to combating internet crimes against children are essential in protecting the most vulnerable members of society. The successful outcomes of this operation underscore the importance of continued vigilance and collaboration in the fight against child exploitation and abuse.
