In a disturbing revelation, the threat actors have posted on their social media accounts, asserting that they have carried out over 200 gas station cyber attacks across Ukraine. They have not disclosed the full list of targeted gas stations, but they have singled out three major victims to demonstrate their capabilities and send a message. The attack coincided with Ukraine’s independence day, adding symbolic weight to the incident. The hackers celebrated the occasion with a post on their dark web channel, stating, “As a gift from our team in honor of the Independence Day of Ukraine – hold on! Attack on 3 large gas station networks in Ukraine.”
The gas station cyber attacks targeted SOCAR Energy Ukraine, WOG (West Oil Group), and Amic Energy. SOCAR Energy Ukraine is a prominent player in the wholesale oil and gas products sector, supplying a diverse range of products to businesses throughout Ukraine. WOG, with over 400 filling stations, is a cornerstone of Ukraine’s gas station landscape and plays a crucial role in the country’s infrastructure. Amic Energy, based in Austria, oversees a network of filling stations and electric vehicle charging stations across several countries, including Ukraine.
During the investigation, alarming signs emerged when the websites of SOCAR Energy Ukraine and WOG went offline, raising suspicions of a potential security breach. Although these revelations provide some insight into the extent of the attack, the claims made by the hackers remain unverified.
