Memcyco Inc., a leading provider of digital trust technology, recently released its first-ever 2024 State of Website Impersonation Scams report. The findings revealed that a significant number of companies lack adequate solutions to combat digital impersonation fraud, with many only becoming aware of attacks through customer reports.
According to Memcyco’s research, over half of the respondents (53%) stated that their current cybersecurity measures are not efficient in addressing website impersonation attacks. Additionally, 41% of participants mentioned that their existing solutions offer only partial protection for themselves and their customers. Surprisingly, only 6% of brands claimed to have a fully effective solution in place, despite 87% of companies acknowledging website impersonation as a major concern and 69% admitting to having been targeted by such attacks in the past.
One of the primary factors contributing to the rise of digital impersonation fraud is the creation of fake websites for phishing-related activities, leading to account takeovers (ATO). This issue has become so severe that cybercriminals managed to accumulate over $1 billion in 2023 alone, as reported by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, tripling the amount stolen in 2020.
The report also highlighted that while 72% of companies have systems to monitor fake versions of their websites, a significant portion (66%) primarily learns about impersonation attacks after customers flag them. Furthermore, 37% of respondents only become aware of such attacks through “brand shaming” on social media by affected customers.
The inadequacy in safeguarding against digital impersonation fraud brings up concerns about companies’ responsibilities towards customer reimbursements. Almost half of the survey participants are already anticipating upcoming regulations that may necessitate compensating customers for fraud-related losses, emphasizing the importance of robust protection mechanisms to prevent revenue loss.
Israel Mazin, Chairman and CEO of Memcyco, highlighted the concerning trend in website impersonation scams, attributing their growth to attackers exploiting companies’ limited visibility into such attacks. He emphasized the urgent need for companies to enhance their online security measures and protect their customers effectively.
The State of Website Impersonation Scams report, conducted in collaboration with Global Surveyz Research, surveyed 200 full-time employees, including Directors and C-level executives, from organizations in the security, fraud, digital, and web sectors. These companies operated transactional websites with monthly traffic exceeding 10,000 visits.
Memcyco’s solution suite aims to combat the increasing threat of website impersonation scams by leveraging real-time alerts to secure end-users during each website visit. The platform also offers organizations valuable insights into the scale and impact of attacks on their websites.
In conclusion, the proliferation of website impersonation scams underscores the critical need for proactive cybersecurity measures to protect businesses and their customers. By investing in advanced technologies and staying vigilant against evolving threats, companies can mitigate the risks posed by digital impersonation fraud and safeguard their online presence effectively.
