WRPS Looking for Male Suspect in Cyberattack Probe

Waterloo Regional Police are currently on the lookout for a wanted male suspect in connection to a series of cyberattacks that targeted a Kitchener-based technology company. The investigation, which began in August 2023, revealed that the company’s networks were breached between May and August 2023, resulting in the unauthorized access and theft of sensitive data. The perpetrator behind these attacks then attempted to extort money from the company by making multiple ransom demands, all of which were unsuccessful.

The impact of these cyberattacks was substantial, with damages estimated to be in the millions of dollars, affecting both the company and its clients. In response to these criminal activities, a warrant for the arrest of the suspect, identified as Wen-Lih Chuang, a 33-year-old Taiwanese National, has been issued. Mr. Chuang faces charges including Unauthorized Use of a Computer, Mischief to Data, Extortion, and Disobeying a Court Order.

Although Mr. Chuang is believed to be in Taiwan, the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Cybercrime Unit is urging anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward.
